One of the most important things you need to know is how your website is performing, so you can keep on improving.

You read lot of misleading information about web traffic. Our favourite is "the hit" - you hear people talking about how many "hits" their website gets. Let's explode that myth. Computers are dumb if left to their own devices. When you view a web page, and take this one as an example, what is sent to your computer is a text file (the HTML), all the image files that make up the borders and icons and pretty stuff, files that contain code to show menus and style information, etc. etc. This page is made up of about 40 or so of these little files. And our web server clocks up a "hit" or each. So by looking at this page, you have generated 40 hits. If the graphics had been more complex, then the number of "hits" could have been many many more. That's not much use! You want to know about real people!

So how do you find out your real traffic information, and how should you be using it?

Imagine actually knowing how many individuals have been on your website, what pages they have looked at, when, and for how long. Did they stay for a proper look around or go after viewing one or two pages? Did they search and search for something before they found it. Did they give up?
