Business
is hard enough without having
to be
an expert
on web technology too.
(The answers to the quiz are at the bottom of the
page, if you are interested)
The questions are real enough if you are
trying to do it ALL yourself, but the important question
is No. 5, and here's the answer...
Beechwood's Managed Web Hosting means you
don't need to be an expert. We look after all the technology
for you.
What if you need to make changes to your website?
One of the reasons our clients like our Managed

Its
that simple. Within your managed hosting solution is some

any changes you require. Like a car, your website works best
when properly and professionally serviced.

or simply keep your website fresh and relevant, this is the

Answers:
1) DNS stands for Domain Name Server or Service. This
is a piece of software that runs on computers "out there
on the web",
whose job it is to tell where to find a website
or email server. A little like directory enquiries, when
given a name, it responds with a unique number. When you enter
an address in your internet browser, its a DNS server (probably
at your
ISP)
that
returns
the
unique internet address of the correct webserver, allowing
your computer
to connect to that server and fetch the page.
2) Mail routing is guided by DNS servers (see 1). Its
the DNS server that tells others the internet address that
your website
or email uses. This computer will the computer sending the
mail exactly where to send it, usually a mailserver at
your ISP. But if your business is using broadband
for example, you might want your email to be delivered directly
to a computer in your office. In this case, the DNS would
need be configured to route e-mail to this
connection. Mail forwarding on the other
hand is where the server configured to accept
email sent to one mail address is programmed to forward the
email on to another mail account. In this way, its possible
to have
mail
originally
sent to "manager@bigcompany.com" to be forwarded
to "johndoe99@hotmail.com". This allows small companies
to have a big company look. This mail can be retreived using
a low-cost dial-up ISP.
3) This website uses a few mega bytes! This is why you
should not choose a hosting solution based on the amount
of space offered! 200 Mb sounds great, but you will never
use more than a fraction of it!
4) Image size is the biggest factor, but badly constructed
pages can account for a lot of additional data that is not
required. The speed of the webserver is also important, and
also how many other websites are sharng that server. Finally,
the quality and quantity of the connections from the web
server to the national and international networks has an
effect. Other factors are outwith your control.
5) Hosting without service is like trying to run a car
without service. It will run ok for a while, deteriorate,
then stop
delivering
results. Beechwood's Managed Hosting Packages ensure that
the investment you made in creating your website pays dividends.
