Competing On The Web, Internet
Marketing, and What It Means To You
(Why its
not just about web design and getting a pretty website!)
As business gets harder for small and large companies alike, using the internet effectively and profitably is essential. Web marketing is rapidly becoming the most important factor that determines business success!
In the last decade Marketing has been turned
on its head.
Last century, Marketing was
something for big companies with big budgets. It involved
a lot of paper being printed and sent, or a lot of telephone
calls being made, most of which went to people who were
not really
interested. The trouble was that this was what you had
to do to reach the few people who might be interested.
This made postmen, lumberjacks and printers very happy!
Then the Internet came into the home and
after a year or so it began to allow people who were
looking for products
and services to
find information about them on providers' websites. The
customers found the internet less intimidating than looking
up Yellow Pages
and calling, they could see information
about the company and what it had to offer, giving them confidence that they were
making
the right
choice, and they could do all this at a time that suited them.
The
trouble was in these early days that there were not so many people looking
and not so many providers had websites, so what the
people brave enough to try found when they searched was
either
not very relevant, or worse, was on the other side of the
planet.
But now...
Things have really changed. Businesses and consumers are using the internet as their first choice method of finding and buying products and services. Every day, more and more businesses realise
the potential of the internet and start doing it right. This means
that when people search they are more likely to find what they are
looking for.
This is good, because the confidence customers have in
using the internet as the primary method of finding providers
is growing, and so the numbers of these potential customers
is growing exponentially. That's not surprising when you
think that you can now surf the web on phones, TVs, and
even fridges! Statistics show that people are on average using the internet longer than they watch TV! Readership of newspapers is declining, and every day the internet steals more and more attention away from other traditional ways for businesses to advertise.
For businesses, however, these changes bring new challenges
- the biggest is how to compete? After all, a couple of years ago a simple
home-spun website did all that was expected of it. It sat
there, looked pretty, and let people look at a photo of
the company's premises and see the phone number they would
have to wait till 9am the next day to call. Highstreet sales fall. Internet sales grow. Makes you think, doesn't it.
Now, with greater competition and
higher expectations of what
the internet can deliver, that good old website has become
a liability not an asset. Worse still, many companies
are unaware that their website is
letting them down - they just think
"My type of business doesn't attract customers through
the internet", and so they look for other reasons
why business is slowly drying up.
So what is "Electronic Marketing" and
what does it mean to your business?
Most people think its about sending spam email. But good
electronic marketing (or e-marketing) brings together marketing, promotion, web
design, e-mail marketing,
and CRM: that's a big idea that relatively
few businesses use to its full potential.
Are you?
Have you ever asked yourself ...
- Why am I not getting more enquiries about my products or services?
- What can I do to get more business?
- Does my website work as well as it could?
- Is my website a cost, not an asset?
- Could I generate more business by reaching more potential customers?
- What can I do to keep my existing customers?
- Could I use new technology, be more efficient, and save
money?
- How do I understand my customers better?
- How can I compete with and beat my competitors?
Whatever your business, we have the answers to
all these questions and perhaps to a few you have not thought
to ask yourself yet!
